An Edmund Rice School

Special Needs

Nagle Rice caters for pupils of all abilities. In our school we are strongly committed to providing a service for our students with learning difficulties. The Special Education Department has its own staff and room with the aim of working with individuals and small groups. Pupils are catered for on a withdrawal basis and in small classes.

Special Tuition Department Mission Statement:

The Special Tuition department operates as part of Pastoral Care Team within the school.

We are aware that effective whole school planning is essential to ensure that the learning needs of all students are identified, adequately resourced and responded to effectively. At the centre of this planning process is the student as a person and as a learner. We are aware that planning is cyclic not linear.

It is our aim to provide students with special educational needs with an integrated educational experience in a mainstream schools,

to cater for students’ individual educational needs: those with specific learning difficulties, physical disabilities and non-specific learning difficulties.

“Aoibhneas” ASD Unit:

The school opened its first ASD Unit in August 2014 to cater for students with ASD.  The ASD Unit is funded and resourced by the DES.  Nagle Rice now operates three Special Classes, under the name of “Aoibhneas”.

Aoibhneas provides students with the opportunity to avail of a specialised individual timetable.  They can attend both mainstream classes and classes within our ASD classroom.  These are on an individual and small-group basis.  Classes target the triad of impairments and a variety of teaching approaches are employed.

Within the ASD classroom there is a sensory area, a chill-out area for relaxation with a couch / armchairs / TV & DVD / magazine supply / board games.  There is also a small kitchenette area, an eating area, a group work area and individual workstations.
